John Boyanoski’s favourite quote: “There is no I in ya’ll.” I heard this one just this week from an amazing poet named Glenis Redmond. It was like getting struck by a lighting bolt.

The Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your backstory?

John Boyanoski : I have a somewhat different path to running a public relations company. I started in newspapers and planned to do that the rest of my life. However, I realized in my early 30s that I was going to get phased out at some point in the next decade or so. That led me to looking for a new career. Public relations seemed like a natural transition with the goal of doing something else in a few years. However, it turned out that I was really good at my job, got promoted quickly and then started my own firm in 2012.

What are the essential tools and technologies you rely on to manage your business effectively??

John Boyanoski : My phone is always with me. Emails, shared documents, texts, calls…almost all of it runs through there. I still use a laptop when I need to do a lot writing, but the phone is where it’s at.

Are there any unconventional or creative approaches you’ve implemented that significantly contributed to the growth and success of your business??

John Boyanoski : I think everything we do is unconventional when it comes to our success. It’s going to sound cliche, but I think a lot of my company’s success comes from never making a client way more than a few hours for an answer. Our goal always is to keep the client in the loop as to what we are working on.

How do you address the learning curve and potential resistance from your team when implementing new tools or technologies? ?

John Boyanoski : The realty is you have to be proactive and stick to it. As the owner, if I’m not using the new tech, then there is no need for the team to use it. I’ll give you a perfect example of when communicating through e-chats became a huge thing. All of my peers kept saying I needed to do it, so I implemented it. Problem was, I was never on there so nothing got accomplished and it faded.
