The AI Reality Check

How Northfield Roofing Co uses AI without automating trust

Marcus Hale is CEO of Northfield Roofing Co, a family-run Columbus company handling residential roof replacements, storm repairs and inspections. He explains how AI speeds up quote writing, why customer review replies remain personal, and how referrals and AI assistants are beginning to shape how customers find the company.

The takeaway

Use AI to reduce time spent on routine paperwork, then put that time into reliable service and direct customer communication. For Northfield Roofing Co, personal responses and neighbour referrals matter more than automated lead promises.

01

What’s the quick origin story of your business, and what makes what you do genuinely different from the other options your customers are looking at?

I started Northfield in 2011 after ten years on other people’s crews, where I watched homeowners get rushed into decisions. We do it the opposite way. Every quote comes with photos of their actual roof, a plain-English explanation and three options, not one. We’re not the cheapest in Columbus, but we’re the company people call back when their neighbour asks who did their roof.

02

Where does most of your new business come from today, and where do you wish it came from?

About 60% is referrals and repeat customers, 30% is Google, and the rest is storm season, when everyone needs someone fast. I wish more came from search for the bigger planned jobs, full replacements booked months ahead, instead of emergency calls at 7am after a hailstorm.

03

What’s one thing you’ve actually handed over to AI in the last year, and one thing you tried it on and went back to doing the human way?

I handed over our quote write-ups. I take photos and voice notes on the roof, and AI turns them into a clean, readable quote in about five minutes instead of an evening. I tried using it to reply to online reviews and stopped after a week. People could tell, and a bad review deserves a real answer from me, not a polished paragraph.

04

Have you noticed a change in how customers find you or what they already know before they reach out? Is anyone arriving through AI assistants like ChatGPT yet?

Customers arrive much better informed. They’ve watched videos and know what ice-and-water shield is. In the last six months a few have said they asked ChatGPT for roofers near them, and we came up because of our reviews and the guides on our website. It’s still a handful, but it’s growing.

05

If you were advising someone in your industry on all of this for the next 12 months, what would you tell them to actually do, and what would you tell them to ignore?

Do: use AI for the paperwork nobody enjoys, like quotes, follow-ups and job summaries, and put the saved time into showing up on time and answering the phone. Ignore: anyone promising AI will “generate leads on autopilot”. In a trust business, the thing that brings work is still a neighbour saying “they did a great job”.
