The takeaway

Strong client relationships and word-of-mouth referrals grew from trust and the experiences clients shared. Sebastian also learned that working harder is not always the answer: pausing to reassess can help a business move in a more useful direction.

01

What’s the short story of how your business started, and what makes it genuinely different from the other options your customers have?

I founded Indulgence Lifestyle Studio in 2008, initially offering primarily aesthetic services alongside some wellness treatments. After navigating my own chronic health challenges, my business evolved into what it is today, an integrative wellness practice specializing in pain recovery and nervous system support.

What makes my approach different is the combination of my 25-plus years in dentistry, my lived experience with chronic pain, and my extensive education in facial and cranial reflexology and craniosacral work. I understand the body from several different perspectives, which allows me to take a more integrated and individualized approach.

My greatest reward is hearing clients describe how much calmer they feel, how their discomfort has improved, and how they feel better equipped to navigate everyday life. Sometimes, simply feeling a sense of peace in your own body again can make an incredible difference.

02

How did you win your first customers, and where does most of your new business come from today?

I was fortunate to have already established a strong reputation through my business and my many years working in the dental community. People knew me, trusted my professionalism, and were open to exploring the new services I was introducing as my business evolved.

Today, most of my new clients come through word-of-mouth referrals, which I consider one of the greatest compliments. One happy client tells another, who tells another, and the circle continues to grow. There is something incredibly rewarding about building a business through genuine relationships, trust, and the experiences people are excited to share.

03

What’s one decision that changed the direction of your business, and one mistake that taught you the most?

The biggest decision was stepping away from a secure career in dentistry and fully committing to the work I felt called to do. This was a not an easy step for me. It meant starting over later in life, relocating, investing in further education, and building something without any guarantees. It was terrifying and exhilarating, sometimes all in the same day!

The biggest mistake was believing that if I just worked harder, pushed harder, and kept forcing things forward, everything would eventually fall into place. I learned that constantly pushing creates resistance, exhaustion, and often takes us further away from what we are trying to accomplish.

Learning to recognize when to move forward and when to step back has changed not only how I run my business but how I live my life. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is stop pushing long enough to see where we actually need to go. For me, it feels much better to allow life to flow with me and meet me where I am at rather than try push against it.

04

What has changed in your industry or in what your customers expect over the last couple of years, and how have you adapted?

One of the biggest changes I have noticed is that people are becoming more open to incorporating complementary and natural wellness approaches into their overall health journey. They are looking beyond individual symptoms and becoming more curious about how physical discomfort, emotional stress, and nervous system function may be connected.

I am also seeing more people who feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and disconnected from themselves. They are not necessarily looking for another quick fix. They want to be heard, understood, and supported in a way that recognizes the whole person.

As my own knowledge and techniques have continued to evolve, I have refined my treatments to better support these needs. I have also expanded into education, workshops, and online resources so that people can develop a greater understanding of their bodies and take a more active role in their well-being.

05

If you were advising someone starting out in your industry today, what would you tell them to do first, and what would you tell them to ignore?

First, believe in yourself and the work you are doing, but never stop learning. Develop your skills, understand your responsibilities, and approach every person with genuine compassion, kindness, and respect.

I also believe it is incredibly important to cultivate a sense of peace within yourself. People can sense when you are calm, present, and genuinely invested in their well-being. You cannot always control what someone is experiencing, but you can influence the environment you create for them.

And what would I tell them to ignore? The negative chatter from people who do not understand your vision! Not everyone will understand your path, and that is perfectly fine. Be open to constructive feedback, but do not allow someone else’s fears, limitations, or opinions to determine what you are capable of achieving.

If I had listened to everyone who questioned my decisions, I certainly would not be doing what I am today. I feel extremely grateful that I kept going!
