Stephen Taylor on seeing business through a customer’s eyes
Stephen Taylor is CEO of BANG GET SEEN, which provides independent diagnostic sessions on businesses’ marketing, sales and customer communications. He explains how referrals brought in clients, why commercial judgement matters alongside AI, and why owners should value profit over attention.
Judge business growth by whether it reaches customers and produces profit, not by attention alone. Commercial judgement also matters when assessing marketing choices and AI outputs.
What’s the short story of how your business started, and what makes it genuinely different from the other options your customers have?
It came naturally. I ran my promotional marketing business for 30 years, inventing and designing many products, growing the business and selling internationally. I was always critical of my own business, with an instant commercial eye for what was right and what could be done differently. After I sold it, people kept asking me to look at their business in the same way. Word spread, the first clients came through friends and recommendations, and it became a natural extension of what I had always done for myself. So I made it official, wrote BANG. GET SEEN. MAKE MONEY. and launched BANG GET SEEN.
What makes us different is that we are not an agency, so we have nothing else to sell you. We look at your business through the eyes of a business owner and a customer, not a designer or a marketer. You get a fixed fee, 70 minute session with clear answers on what’s working, what isn’t and how to fix it.
And we back what we say. We offer a 10 minute money back guarantee because we’re that confident we can make a difference. If you’re not getting real value in the first 10 minutes, you get your money back. That’s how strongly we believe in what we do.
How did you win your first customers, and where does most of your new business come from today?
My first customers came naturally through friends, personal contacts and word of mouth. Having spent 30 years building and running my own business, people already knew I had a sharp commercial eye and started asking me to look at their websites, marketing and sales materials. Those conversations turned into recommendations and paying clients.
Today, we’re building awareness through social media, particularly Instagram and LinkedIn, alongside networking and personal recommendations. My book, BANG. GET SEEN. MAKE MONEY., is also an important part of introducing my approach to a wider audience.
What’s one decision that changed the direction of your business, and one mistake that taught you the most?
One tiny decision completely changed the direction of my business career.
I was attending a marketing exhibition and had reached the point where I’d had enough. I wanted to leave, sit in the sunshine and enjoy the rest of the day. But I’d come all that way, and something stopped me.
I knew I didn’t know everything. There was still plenty I could learn. So I made a deal with myself. I wasn’t leaving until I’d taken away just one new idea. Something different. Something I hadn’t thought of before. Nothing more, nothing less. Just one.
Then I spotted a notice board advertising talks upstairs. I picked one and went along. The speaker said something that sparked an idea.
That one decision changed everything.
Five days later, the first version of my book, BANG. GET SEEN. MAKE MONEY., was written. It took another five months to refine, develop and complete, but the spark that ultimately led to my new business came from that one moment.
What makes BANG GET SEEN different is that we are not an agency, so we have nothing else to sell you. We look at your business through the eyes of a business owner and a customer, not a designer or a marketer. You get a fixed fee, 70 minute session with clear answers on what’s working, what isn’t and how to fix it. And we back what we say. If you’re not getting real value in the first 10 minutes, you get your money back.
I nearly walked away from an opportunity I didn’t even know existed.
The biggest lesson? SHOW UP.
It’s something I’ve always known intuitively and applied throughout my life. Show up with a great attitude, give everything you’ve got and keep pushing for more.
I don’t give up. When others might have walked away, I’m still there, still pushing, still looking for that opportunity. I believe in applying myself fully to everything I do. Nothing less than 100% is acceptable.
And sometimes the greatest things in life happen when you least expect them. But they won’t happen if you’re not there.
Your job is to show up.
And we back what we say. If you’re not getting real value in the first 10 minutes, you get your money back.
The lesson? Sometimes the difference between an ordinary day and a life changing opportunity is simply deciding to stay or just showing up.
What has changed in your industry or in what your customers expect over the last couple of years, and how have you adapted?
AI is an absolute game changer in business. But it has a blind spot: you. AI is only as good as your ability to understand, question and evaluate what it produces.
If you don’t understand what you’re asking for, how can you possibly know whether the answer is any good? You need the knowledge and commercial judgement to evaluate AI outputs both qualitatively and quantitatively. Otherwise, you’re simply accepting something that looks convincing without knowing whether it’s correct, effective or commercially sensible.
And then there’s customer service. Businesses seem to think they can subcontract customer care to a handful of bots, remove the human element and still expect fantastic results. They can’t. Customers want answers, solutions and to feel valued, not to be trapped in an endless conversation with a machine that doesn’t understand their problem.
Technology should make businesses better, not give them an excuse to forget their customers.
That’s exactly why BANG GET SEEN is relevant today. We bring independent commercial judgement to an increasingly automated world, looking beyond the technology to ask whether the message makes sense, the customer experience works and the business is actually benefiting.
AI can produce the output. But who’s checking whether it’s any good?
If you were advising someone starting out in your industry today, what would you tell them to do first, and what would you tell them to ignore?
Ignore the social media gurus and fake business experts telling you that a million clicks will change your life, that everyone can become an entrepreneur and that building a successful business is easy. It’s nonsense.
There’s only one place where success comes before work, and that’s in the dictionary.
We’ve created a generation that thinks business success is just a few clicks away. Come up with an idea, launch a website, post a few videos and watch the money roll in. The reality couldn’t be more different.
Building a business takes hard work, determination, resilience and an enormous amount of personal commitment. You need the right idea, a clear understanding of your customers and the commercial sense to know whether your business can actually make money. Don’t overextend yourself, don’t confuse turnover with profit and don’t mistake social media attention for commercial success. A million views don’t pay your bills.
And here’s something else I feel strongly about. Not every entrepreneur needs to build a billion dollar company. There’s an obsession with scaling, raising investment and becoming the next unicorn. But what’s wrong with building a small, profitable business that provides a good living, looks after its customers and gives its owner independence and satisfaction?
Absolutely nothing. Those businesses deserve enormous respect.
My advice? Be prepared to work, 24 hours a day if that’s what it takes. If you’re not willing or able to apply yourself fully to what you do, don’t be surprised when things don’t work out the way you think they should.
Hard work, dedication, sweat and tears are all part of a successful journey. Very few people have achieved anything without disappointments, vision and successful execution.
So ignore the noise, get the fundamentals right and build something that actually makes money. Success isn’t measured by how big your business becomes, but by what it achieves for you. Always remember – Turnover is vanity and Profit is sanity!
