From a jet-set to burnout to discovering the true meaning of freedom.
It all started when I left my home country Germany and moved to beautiful Madeira Island.

5 years ago I found myself living a fast-paced life as a consultant and business coach, supposedly helping others achieve work-life balance. Ironically, I was completely out of balance, overwhelmed by stress and exhaustion.

Despite the glamorous appearances of traveling from one big city to another, my energy levels plummeted. I had no time for exercise or personal connections, and I felt disconnected from my own soul. Caught up in a relentless pursuit of goals and money, I was heading towards a breaking point.

Then, one morning, my body rebelled. Unable to get out of bed, I realized I was on the brink of a burnout. It was a wake-up call, a moment of reckoning that made me realize I needed a drastic change. I took a much-needed break and landed in Madeira, a paradise island in Portugal, where I allowed myself to relax and reflect.

From the moment I set foot on this idyllic island, I knew deep down that it was where I wanted to live. But practicalities held me back temporarily. However, after some time and the passing of loved ones, I made the courageous decision to let go of my old life and fully embrace Madeira. With my cats, laptop, and a suitcase, I embarked on a new chapter.

During my sabbatical, I cocooned myself in contemplation, observing the ebb and flow of the ocean waves. It was a transformative period where I gained clarity about the life I wanted to create. Madeira provided the perfect backdrop for my personal metamorphosis, aligning my lifestyle with my values.
Since I moved to Madeira I held steadfast to my commitment to elevate my body, mind, and soul. Through organic food, exercise, meditation, and meaningful connections, I nurtured my own transformation.

Amidst the global pandemic, I also encountered a unique challenge when I realized that living on a small island like Madeira, heavily reliant on tourism, meant that my clients couldn’t travel here during this time. However, the silver lining was that Madeira boasts excellent internet infrastructure, which enabled me to adapt and connect with my clients virtually through platforms like Zoom. This unexpected shift allowed me to expand my reach internationally, tapping into the global market of mission-driven leaders who were seeking my support and guidance. Despite the physical limitations, the power of technology and the strong remote work community in Madeira came together to bridge the gap and create new opportunities.
Now, more than ever, I understand the significance of maintaining balance and freedom, even in the face of immense challenges.

How the process has began it will also end. Looking at the stages of the Dragon Dreaming method. We began with the dreaming, the vision. Went thought planning and doing. Now it is time to celebrate with a virtual glass of champagne.

Swanette Kuntze : Achieving a harmonious work-life balance is not only essential but paramount for remote workers, enabling them to avoid burnout and nurture their overall well-being. It is important to create boundaries between their work and personal lives:

1. Cultivate a sacred workspace: Carve out a dedicated area exclusively for work, separate from your personal living spaces. This physical demarcation fosters a psychological boundary, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in your work while maintaining the sanctity of your personal life. Use for example a remote work space in town or another office for your work time.

2. Embrace the power of routine: Craft a consistent daily routine with fixed working hours. Embracing a predictable schedule instills structure and empowers you to effectively manage your time.

3. Foster clear boundaries and time blocking: Articulate your availability and working hours to your team and colleagues. Clearly delineate your “on” and “off” work periods, honoring these boundaries as steadfastly as possible. Minimize the allure of emails, notifications, and work-related apps during non-working hours. Dedicate specific periods to check and respond to work-related communication, granting yourself the gift of uninterrupted personal time. Utilize time blocking techniques to allocate specific time slots for work-related tasks, personal activities, and self-care. This deliberate approach enables focused attention while ensuring that personal time remains safeguarded against the encroachment of work demands.

4. Embrace transition rituals: Develop rituals or practices that facilitate a seamless mental shift between work and personal life. Whether it’s taking a leisurely stroll, going out for sports, or engaging in a mindfulness exercise, these transition rituals enhance your ability to be fully present in each realm. As I work in a different time zone then most of my clients my days begin with playing Padel Tennis, swimming, meditation etc before I start my work.

5. Align and harmonize your Wheel of Life: Take a moment to assess your Wheel of Life, gaining valuable insights on ho w to balance the various facets of your existence. Dedicate time to engage in activities that nurture your well-being, whether it’s staying active through exercise, indulging in hobbies that bring you joy, fostering meaningful connections with loved ones and friends, or embracing rejuvenating relaxation techniques. Embrace self-care as a vital cornerstone of your daily routine, valuing it on par with your work commitments. By honoring the holistic aspects of your life, you cultivate a sense of equilibrium and fulfillment.
