Why Muhammad Butt chose verified AI guides over volume

Muhammad Butt founded AI Tool Steps to publish beginner-friendly, step-by-step guides to using AI tools. After publishing at high volume brought little search traffic or revenue, Butt shifted toward verified, problem-solving guides, offering a practical lesson in building trust as search habits change.

The takeaway

A guide is useful only if it solves a real problem and works in the actual tool. Verify one guide step by step before publishing, rather than relying on volume to build trust.

01

What’s the short story of how your business started, and what makes it genuinely different from the other options your customers have?

I started AI Tool Steps because AI tools were launching every day, but the guides about them assumed you already knew the jargon. A beginner would open a tool, get stuck on step one, and give up. So I started writing plain, step-by-step guides — one tool, one real task, every step you can actually follow. We now publish 10 guides a day, 200+ guides so far, each one 1,500+ words. What makes us different is that a guide is only published after the steps have been checked against the real tool. We write to be useful and to be cited — not to chase rankings with listicles.

02

How did you win your first customers, and where does most of your new business come from today?

We don’t sell to customers — our readers are beginners looking for help with a specific AI tool, and they find us through our guides. Most of our traffic today comes from social media (about 60%), with only about 5% from Google search. Our readers arrive one guide at a time — someone searching how to use a tool lands on the exact guide, follows it, and comes back for the next tool. That is the whole model: every guide is an entry point.

03

What’s one decision that changed the direction of your business, and one mistake that taught you the most?

The decision that changed everything was stopping chasing search rankings and starting to write guides that can be cited — guides an AI search answer or a real person would actually quote, because the steps are verified and complete. The mistake was believing volume alone would earn. I published 10 guides a day, 200+ guides, and in the last 28 days that earned 19 clicks from 3,024 impressions and $0.10 from AdSense — and Google flagged the site as ‘low-value content’. Volume without depth earns nothing. Now we are refreshing the older high-impression guides one by one, making them deeper and genuinely problem-solving, instead of just publishing more.

04

What has changed in your industry or in what your customers expect over the last couple of years, and how have you adapted?

In the last couple of years, AI search started answering questions directly, so the clicks a guide used to get are being siphoned away — and at the same time, new AI tools launch daily, so beginners are more overwhelmed, not less. Readers no longer want a list of ten tools; they want one answer they can trust and follow. We adapted by cutting hype topics, writing only practical problem-solving guides, and refreshing older guides toward page one instead of letting them sit — depth and verification over volume.

05

If you were advising someone starting out in your industry today, what would you tell them to do first, and what would you tell them to ignore?

Do this first: pick one real problem a beginner has, solve it yourself in the actual tool, and publish one guide you have verified step by step. One honest, working guide beats ten rewritten ones. Ignore the volume game — ignore anyone telling you to publish ten shallow posts a day, chase trending keywords you haven’t tested, or pay for backlinks. Verify before you publish, every single time. That one habit is what builds trust, and trust is the only thing that compounds.
