The Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your backstory?

Brian Sheridan : For 20 years I have used the power of collective action to achieve social good in the face of limited marketing budgets. By inviting corporate, nonprofit and government partners to come together in pursuit of a common goal, I’ve discovered that we have the power to mobilize millions of individuals to take action. My philosophy of collaboration is manifested in the annual California Clean Air Day: by the time the 5th annual campaign came around in 2022, more than 550 organizations helped activate an estimate 2 million Californians!

In what ways has your company worked to reduce its environmental impact, and what results have you seen from these efforts?

Brian Sheridan : “I pledge to take action for clean air” has been a powerful rallying cry for millions of Californians over the past five years. The first Wednesday of every October, clean air pledgers come together to take action, creating a community of individuals, businesses, government agencies and nonprofits committed to clean air.

Our community of 550 organizational partners collective helped us inspire an estimated 2 million Californians to take action for clean air. Corporate partners like Blue Shield of California, Southern California Edison, Ancestry, Waymo, Bird and others were are critical part of getting employees and customers to try transit, switch to an electric vehicle, install solar and more.

When it comes to corporate ESG, campaigns like #CleanAirDayCA tackle one of the hardest emissions categories: tier 3. To a large degree, businesses have a lot of power to lower emissions from tier 1 and tier 2 emissions since they control their own operations. Controlling the attitudes of employees and other stakeholders is another story. We need to get creative. That’s where California Clean Air Day comes in.

What challenges have you faced in implementing sustainable practices, and how have you overcome them?

Brian Sheridan : California has two of the smoggiest air basins in the United States and some of the most ambitious climate goals in the nation. Although I’m proud of our ability to engage hundreds of business partners, I know that we have to get to a much bigger scale. Our challenge over the next few years will be to move from hundreds of partners to thousands.
