The Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your backstory?

Kami Turky : Hi, my name is Kami, I’m a solar engineer and the CEO of SEH, a company that manufactures solar lights.

In your opinion, what makes your company stand out? Any examples?

Kami Turky : We manufacture our lights from recycled solar panels. After 20 years, the solar cells starts to lose its efficiency (ability to convert sunlight into electricity) so they can’t power big devices. However, these solar cells can be used to power smaller devices like solar lights that don’t need a lot of power to function.

What are the TOP 5 mistakes people make when starting a new business? Please share advice/examples for all of them.

Kami Turky : 1. Underestimating how quickly things can change in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. It’s no longer enough just to have an idea – you need to be able to stay on top of trends and adapt quickly if you want your venture to thrive in today’s highly competitive environment. In order to do this effectively, you’ll need to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset and adopt pro-active thinking skills that allow you to spot opportunities and act quickly before they pass you by

2. Assuming that having a great idea will be enough to gain traction in the marketplace. While a groundbreaking concept can certainly get your business off the ground, you will also need strong marketing strategies, good customer service practices, and solid financial planning in order to make it succeed in the long term.

3. Failing to build a solid team from the start. Having well-rounded expertise across various areas such as sales, operations, support, and engineering is vital for achieving success in any industry. Thus it’s important to hire people who have complementary skills rather than just those with similar experience or qualifications as yourself.

4. Trying to do everything on your own is another big mistake that many new business owners make when they first get started. Not only does this take away valuable time that could be spent focusing on more urgent matters such as sales or product development, but it can also lead to mistakes due to lack of knowledge or experience in areas where you may not be as confident or skilled. Outsourcing tasks like bookkeeping or IT support allows you to focus on what’s most important while still maintaining control over important decisions and processes within your organization.

5. Setting unrealistic expectations for themselves and their businesses based on hype from other companies instead of taking a more grounded approach to growth potential and potential challenges along the way. Thinking long-term instead of always looking at short-term gains can help you plan out realistic goals and avoid getting discouraged when results don’t meet overly ambitious expectations right off the bat. By avoiding these common pitfalls when starting a new business venture, you can give yourself the best chance at creating something truly successful and fulfilling!
