How VirtuHire US uses AI without automating human fit
Aden Ritz is US Growth Partner at VirtuHire US, which places full-time, pre-vetted South African professionals with US businesses. Aden Ritz explains how AI helps screen candidates, why final fit still takes human judgment, and how buyers arriving through ChatGPT are changing sales calls.
AI can speed up candidate screening, but deciding whether someone fits a particular team still calls for human judgment. VirtuHire US also sees value in making clear information about its service and pricing easy for AI assistants to find, while keeping the customer relationship human.
What’s the quick origin story of your business, and what makes what you do genuinely different from the other options your customers are looking at?
VirtuHire started in Cape Town, placing South African professionals with international companies, and has since placed 750+ people across 272 clients. I run the US side. The difference is that we’re not a freelancer marketplace or a recruiting fee. You get a full-time person with a top-3 shortlist and video intros in about 5 business days, one flat monthly rate, and payroll, compliance and replacements handled by us.
Where does most of your new business come from today, and where do you wish it came from?
Today it’s mostly direct outreach on LinkedIn and email, plus a growing share of people who find our website on their own and book a call. I’d like more of it to come from referrals and from people who already trust us before the first call.
What’s one thing you’ve actually handed over to AI in the last year, and one thing you tried it on and went back to doing the human way?
We use AI to screen candidates against the role spec, which is a big part of how we get a shortlist out in days instead of weeks. What we took back is the final call on fit. A model can match skills, but whether someone suits a particular founder and their way of working still takes a person.
Have you noticed a change in how customers find you or what they already know before they reach out? Is anyone arriving through AI assistants like ChatGPT yet?
Yes, and it’s been the surprise of the year. A meaningful share of the buyers who book calls on our site now come from ChatGPT, and they show up already knowing our pricing and how the model works. The calls are shorter and further along.
If you were advising someone in your industry on all of this for the next 12 months, what would you tell them to actually do, and what would you tell them to ignore?
Make sure the AI assistants can find a clear, honest answer about what you do and what it costs, because that’s where buyers are starting. Ignore the pressure to automate the relationship itself. The handover to a real person is still what closes.
